Why do we work?…For a sense of purpose? To pay our bills? To provide for our families? Do we live to work, or work to live? Whatever it is at some point in our lives we retire from work, whether sooner or later.
What if we could live frugally, save, and invest to free ourselves from the constraints of the typical 9-5 as fast as we can? Allowing us more of the most valuable resource we have – time. Welcome to the pursuit of FIRE or Financial Independence Retire Early.
There are various forms of FIRE with new one sprouting up each day. The most popular ones will be summarized in this article.
LeanFIRE
LeanFIRE focuses on achieving financial independence and early retirement by minimizing expenses. Followers of this approach aim to cover their basic needs with a relatively small amount of savings, often by adopting frugal lifestyles and cutting unnecessary expenses to the bone.
FatFIRE
FatFIRE is the opposite of LeanFIRE. It involves accumulating a larger amount of wealth to sustain a more comfortable or luxurious lifestyle during retirement. FatFIRE adherents typically aim for higher income streams or wealth accumulation before retiring early.
CoastFIRE
CoastFIRE involves reaching a point where your investments can grow to cover your expenses at a traditional retirement age without any further contributions. Once CoastFIRE is achieved, individuals may choose to continue working but with reduced hours or in a less demanding capacity, knowing that their financial future is secure.
BaristaFIRE
BaristaFIRE is a hybrid approach where individuals achieve financial independence but continue working in part-time or less stressful jobs to cover their living expenses, often in roles that they find fulfilling or enjoyable. It offers more flexibility and reduces the need for a large retirement nest egg.
